Thus they’ve become the dominant gender.The four sects of Arta include the Geisians, a religious order that believes all magîce flows down from the Great Mother Spirit, Geis, the Mages, who believe that magîce is a product of mental focus and concentration, the Hedonists, who believe magîce manifests from the energy of the flesh itself, and the so-called Barbarians, who see magîce as a byproduct of peak emotional experiences—rage, despondency, elation, and such.Different sects summon and channel this mystical energy in different ways, but no one has been more successful at harvesting vast amounts of magîce than Inarzia, the current empress of Arta. Her power increases by the day, and some say she and the Geisians will eclipse all other sects and plunge the world of Arta into darkness where all are forced to serve the Great Mother and her empress and freedom is a memory of the past.
The Ancients are watching however, the great champions of the past who have ascended to immortality and have given themselves to the service of Arta. They seek a new champion to undo the treachery of Inarzia and restore peace to the world. But which of the Bare Maidens has the courage in her heart to sacrifice everything for the good of the world?
